Algester: Community Living between the Motorways

Post Code: 4115     Distance to CBD: 16 km

Algester is a suburb in Brisbane. The suburb’s name is derived from the corruption of the word Alcester, the name of the main street in Mosely, England. Mosely is the birthplace of F.S. Brecknell who subdivided the area in the 1920’s and who gave the name of the area. Algester used to be a part of Acacia Ridge and its former name is Ridgewood Heights. In 1972, the Queensland Place Names Board substituted Algester as its name. The suburb was substantially developed after World War II. It is a part of Brisbane Agricultural Reserve which once covered much of southern Brisbane.

Algester is primarily residential with local shops on Silkwood Street. It also has a wide variety of restaurants and cafes. The suburb has several parks which include the Endiandra Street Park, the Laurel Oak Park, the Lorikeet Park, Pardalote Park and the Ridgewood Road Park (Col Bennett Park). It has a shopping centre, the Central Park Shopping Centre. Shopping centres from nearby suburbs like Acacia Ridge and Calamvale also caters to the local residents. The suburb is ideal for families. It has a State primary school and a Catholic primary school.

Most of the houses in the suburb were modern and were constructed with bricks. They usually have four-bedrooms, one living room and double garage. Other houses have colonial, Cape Cod, and Hispanic architecture. Palm trees lined most of the major roads with the power lines installed below the ground. Algester lies between two major motorways, the Logan Motorway and the Gateway Motorway.

Algester’s Top Landmark:

o    Col Bennett Park

The park is one of Brisbane’s active recreation parks. It is popular with the local residents for the everyday leisure stroll and for kid’s activities, such as athletics training for children. Most of the community events of Algester and the neighboring suburbs are held at the park. There is an annual event called Family Fun Day held at the park that is sponsored by the Sunday’s Lions Club of Algester. The event often features treats for the teen-agers and kids like rock climbing wall, jumping castle, mini-jeep rides, ball crawl or ball swim, face painting, magic comedy shows and pony rides. The park is also used for local sports activities and competitions. The park is the hub of the local residents and it is alive with community spirit.

The park is named after Col Bennett, a barrister, sports patron, and a long-serving Member of Parliament for South Brisbane.
