Ashgrove is a residential suburb within Brisbane, about 5 kilometers away from the Central Business District. It is the most unique of Brisbane’s suburbs for its houses with ‘Ashgrovian’ architecture. Most of these houses were constructed mainly with wood and tin during the 1920’s and 1930’s and were meticulously preserved. The houses feature a large deck verandah, a gabled roof, and wide spacious rooms. The market value of the house ranges from $500,000 to $3,000,000. Most of the residents here belong to the high-income earners and professionals. This is also the popular choice of young couples starting a family.

Bushwalking and Mountain/Dirt Bike Riding in Ashgrove

Bushwalking is the local term for hiking. Aside from the open spaces like the Ashgrove Sports Ground, the Woods Memorial Playground in St. John’s Woods and the Dorrington Park, Ashgove has a long track/trail that meanders through the suburb. Dorrington Park is sometimes called ‘The Enchanted Forest’ by the locals and it is an attraction for the kids. It has an electronic story-telling toadstool where the kids can simply press a button and the toadstool will tell a story through a speakers. The Woods Memorial Playground is created to honor the local veterans of the world wars and the currently serves as the home of the local scouting groups. While in St. John’s Woods, you can also visit the historic Granite House.

Glen Lyon House

The house was originally built in the 1870’s by Alexander Stewart, a Scott and one of Queensland pioneers. It is named after Glen Lyon, Scotland, the birthplace of Alexander Stewart. The house is constructed from locally made bricks and plaster. It has imported Corinthian columns, black and white marble floors for its patio and a stained-glass window featuring a lion’s head with the motto ‘semper fidelis’. The house lies within a large estate with a tennis court, spacious gardens, and terraced lawns. Glen Lyon House is the second oldest building in Ashgrove. The place is now owned by the Marist Brothers Monastery and the Marist Brothers College.
