Bulimba – A Family Friendly Place

Post Code: 4171 Distance to CBD: 5 km

Bulimba is a suburb by the Brisbane River. It is a promontory with three sides facing the river. Bulimba is known for its quays that harbor Brisbane’s sailing clubs where mangroves thrive, the bicycle paths, art galleries, the shops and the sidewalk cafes at Oxford Street. It also has open parks and riverside walks overlooking the Brisbane River. For an excellent view of the river, it is best to ride the CityCat, a catamaran service that starts from the Bretts Wharf near Apollo Road. However, you will find that most of the Bulimba residents either walk or bike ride to the city proper. Morning walks are popular activities in this suburb

Bulimba’s Top Attractions

Oxford Street

The street is at the center of the suburb where most of the commercial and entertainment activities are done. It has a cinema and the historic Oxford 152 pub. This is where most of the locals mingle and do their everyday shopping. It has a variety of restaurants, about 15 of them, specializing on local, Japanese, Italian, Thai and Turkish dishes.

Morningsong

This is one of Bulimba’s unique contributions to the musical art. Morningsong is a community, non-religious, a capella, and an adult singing choir. The choir is convened by Jane Becktel, a music teacher. There are no auditions required and no music notes to read. The songs with its melodies and harmonies are learned by the ear and it is open to all who loves music. However they do not sing modern songs like pop or rock, instead they sing traditional songs from various cultures from around the world and classical pieces. Morningsong is about having fun, human interaction, and friendly comraderie. It is focused on bringing harmony together rather than performance. It only requires the love of music, the patience to learn, and the time for group singing.

Bulimba’s Memorial Park

This memorial park was created for the veterans of the First World War. It’s a big open space lined with fig trees that were planted in 1919. The park now serves as a playground for children and a place to stroll for the adults. It is also the home of a soccer club where they allow children to play and practice.

Bulimba is also a haven for sports activity like sailing, rowing, soccer, cycling and cricket. It also has a 9-hole golf course where golfers can hone their skills.
