Clayfield- Inner-Northern Suburb of Brisbane

Post Code: 4011 Distance to CBD: 6 km

Clayfield is a Brisbane suburb about 7 kilometers north from the Central Business District. Its name is derived from the sedimentary clay found in the area and was used for the brick making industry. The material is influential in the migration of European settlers in the area. Clayfield is a prestigious place with houses in colonial architecture and modern architecture. Most of the residents are professional young couples. The suburb is elevated and overlooks the city of Brisbane with Bartley’s Hill Lookout offering the best view of the entire city

Clayfield’s Main Attractions

The Eagle Farm Race Track and Doomben Race Track

The two race tracks are adjacent to each other with only a road that separates them. There are two schedules of horse racing at Eagle Farm, the midweek race and on Saturdays or holidays, which can be subject to change. Doomben also have the same schedule of races. The admission cost varies on the schedule. For midweeks, it is $10 for adults. For Eagle Farm, both non-adults and pensioners have free admission, but for Doomben, it is $5 for students and $3 for pensioners. For Saturdays and holidays, Farm Eagle charges $15 for adults with free admission for non-adults and pensioners, while Doomben charges $12 for adults, $6 for students and $5 for pensioners. The entrance gates usually open at 10:30 am and the race starts at around 11:30 am. Strict dress codes are implemented at specified sections of the racecourse facilities.

However, the race tracks are not mainly for horse racing. Eagle Farm provides its colonial inspired buildings to cater to various social occasions.

Telstra Museum

This is a museum dedicated to preserving the historical artifacts of telecommunication for the last 150 years in Queensland. There are also other Telstra Museums in other parts of Australia. The museum is a project of the Postal-Telecommunication Historical Society of Queensland, a group founded by Post Office volunteers. Many of the historical artifacts are donated by the society which the volunteers collected, catalogued, fixed and preserved. The museum displays several exhibits with ‘hands on’ training on Morse code and manual telephone interchange. The museum is open on Wednesdays with free admission but donations are accepted.

Breakfast Creek Hotel

Come and enjoy the flavor of history. The hotel is literally haunted in history. It started as a pub in 1890 from a house built in 1889 by William MacNaughton Galloway, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane whose initials now appears in the front façade. Galloway is reported to have fallen to his death from the second floor while intoxicated and his ghost is reportedly being seen in the original sections of the pub. The pub evolved into a magnificent hotel by the Brisbane River, restoring its former glory and as a custodian of local folklore and urban legends.
