Indooroopilly’s Top Attractions

o   Indooroopilly Island Conservation Park

The island is about seven kilometers west of the Central Business District near the Indooroopilly suburb. The “Batty Boat Cruise” provides a sunset boat cruise to the island that gives an exciting nature-inspiring experience. The island has an area of 6.34 hectares and is the home of the flying foxes which is one of the largest bat colonies in Queensland. The island vegetation consists of two mangrove species and the forest red gum eucalyptus tree. In Australian summer, the island can have several hundred thousands of flying foxes. The number depends on the availability of the flowering eucalypt and melaleuca trees. There are three varieties of flying foxes in the island, the black flying foxes, the grey-headed flying foxes, and the little red flying foxes.

The island also has bush turkeys and other species of birds and several species of snakes. The boat cruise also provides an expert lecture about the bats and a “hands on” and close-up encounter with the animals by the bat experts who take care of orphaned bats on board the cruise.

o    Walter Taylor Bridge

The bridge crosses the Brisbane River and connects the suburbs Indooroopilly and Chelmer. The bridge design is similar to the Hercilio Luz Bridge in Florianopolis, Brazil with the truss, which bears the weight of the bridge, placed above the roadway. This configuration is known as Steinman or Florianopolis type. It is open to all types of motor vehicles and pedestrians. The bridge is unique because the two towers of the suspension bridge have residential units which are still being occupied.
