Post Code: 4109     Distance to CBD: 14 km

Sunnybank is most populous suburbs in Brisbane and most of the residents are migrants from East Asia. With the high concentration of Chinese in the suburb, the Chinatown in Fortitude Valley faces a stiff competition in popularity as the real Chinatown. The suburb is famous for its Chinese restaurants and supermarkets. The most popular Chinese restaurants are the Shangri-La and Landmark which was appreciated not only by the residents of Sunnybank but the entire Brisbane City.

The suburb has a shopping area, the Sunnybank Plaza Shopping Centre, that has two cinemas. Sunnybank also has several parks and open spaces, like the Sunnybank Park, Sporting Ground, and Coopers Plain Park which are commonly used for leisure and sporting events.

The suburb’s most popular attraction is The Oasis Garden, an 8 acre resort with swimming pools, gardens and a mini-zoo that features Koalas, Kangaroos and Australian Parrots. However, the resort is now closed.

Most of the houses in Sunnybank are 25 years old. The houses are mostly single-detached units constructed in bricks and tiles. However, modern townhouses are getting to be popular for singles.

Sunnybank Popular Attractions

o    Sunnybank Theater Group

The group composes of volunteers dedicated to the performing arts. The performers, crew and production staff are all volunteers. The theater group presents dramas, comedies, pantomimes and musicals at a fully air-conditioned theater located at 14 Mains Road in the suburb of Sunnybank. It is a non-professional company that showcases the community’s love for the performing arts. The theatre also has a bar that only opens after a show. This allows the theatre patrons and the theatre’s cast and crew to mingle and enjoy a drink.

o   Shangri-La and Landmark Restaurant

The Chinese cuisine is one of the reasons why the city dwellers will drive a long way to this suburb. The long queues to the restaurants testify to their popularity. Both Shangri-La and Landmark serves yum cha and a variety of dumplings. Landmark specializes in Cantonese Cuisine while Shangri-La seems to have the eight flavors of China. The most common complaint is it takes time, about one and a half hour, to get the food on the table. A customer may think that the service is bad because of the long wait. Often, the customers do not realize that it takes time to cook the food and it also takes time to prepare it for the customer’s table. But then, the long wait is worth it because the food tastes delicious
