West End: Lively Mixture of Cultures

Post Code: 4101     Distance to CBD: 3 km

West End is a Brisbane suburb located about 3 kilometers southwest of the Central Business District. West End is also a promontory created by the meandering Brisbane River. The suburb was named by the early English settlers who found the area just like the West End of London. West End is connected to the suburbs of South Brisbane and Highgate Hill.

The demography of West End is a mixture of immigrants from various countries, like Greece, Italy, Vietnam and China. It is also the home of the largest Aboriginal community in Brisbane. It also has a large population of students because of its proximity to the University of Queensland.

Just like in the other suburbs, the housing is a mixture of the unique Queenslander architecture and contemporary architecture. Most of the commercial activities are done in Boundary Street, which is the site of ethnic shops.

West End Top Attraction:

o    The National Trust Heritage Centre

The centre is a collection of three preserved heritage houses which include the Worker’s Dwelling, The Currajong, and The Farmhouse. The houses are typical Queensland Houses. The Worker’s Dwelling is a simple miner’s cottage built in 1884. The Currajong is an opulent villa residence built in 1888. The Farmhouse is a typical house occupied by farmers and it is built in 1921. The houses were restored and furnished with articles and furniture from the period the house was built. It also highlights the articles and furniture made in Queensland. The centre is open on Wednesdays from 10:00 am to 2:00 p.m. and on weekends from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m..

o    The Green Flea Community Market

This event is held every Saturday from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Davies Park. The market has a festive atmosphere of a country fair. Most of the products in the market are produced locally like fruits and vegetables, home made olive oil and cheese, and locally designed garments and fashion accessories. There are also cafes where you can sit down and savor the local cuisine.

o    Brisbane Vintage Fashion Fairs

The fair is a regular event that exhibits the dazzling assortment of fashion accessories and garments from the Victorian, Roaring 20’s, the Fabulous Fifties, Swinging Sixties, the Flower People of the Seventies, Punky 80’s and all those things that bring back a lot of memories. Most of the buyers are serious collectors of memorabilia and fashion design students. You might find some thespian artists shopping for theatrical props or costume.
