Wynnum’s Top Attraction

o    Mangrove Boarwalk

The boardwalk is part of a mangrove forest in Wynnum Creek. The mangrove forest is the habitat of Australian wildlife and migratory birds. The 500 meter boardwalk starts at Elanora Park at Granda Street. It is ideal for bird watching and observing species of reptiles like lizards in the mangrove forest. For serious bird watchers, the most common species of birds found in this area includes the Yellow-faced Honeyeater, White-throated Treecreeper, Pale-headed Rosella, Collared Kingfisher, Rufous Whistler and the Mangrove Gerygone.

o    Pandanus Beach

The artificial white sand beach is a popular attraction for the city dwellers to beat the summer heat. The place is great for swimming, frolicking in the white sand and for a family picnic. It is also adjacent to the Wading Pool, a salt water swimming pool which was built in 1931 by unemployed men on relief work. The Wading Pool is also used for aqua aerobic class and kids’ swimming lessons. The beach is also beside the Water Park which was opened in 2004. The water park features large blue rubber whales that spurts water from the whales blowholes at intervals. It is a great way to get wet and to have fun. For fishing aficionados, the beach is also near the Wynnum Jetty which is great for fishing.

o    St. Helena Island National Park

The island is only visible from Wynnum, Manly and Lota suburbs. It used to be a prison starting from 1867 and it currently serves as a national park. The island has a permanent water supply, a spring in the middle of the island which currently serves as a watering hole for migratory birds. The island is named St. Helena after an aboriginal named Napolen was exiled there. The prison was closed in 1933 and was converted into a national park. The island is accessed by touring companies like the Getaway Cruising and the Cat O’ Nine Tails.
